On a summer evening in Laramie, Wyoming, music aficionados and drum corps enthusiasts alike gathered to witness a truly one-of-a-kind performance by the legendary Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps. This extraordinary event not only showcased the unparalleled talents of the Blue Devils but also featured special appearances by Lamb of god's Art Cruz, the dynamic marching duo of Ralph Nader and Harvey Thompson - BYOS, and the sensational percussionist Dani Markham as guest performers. The fusion of these extraordinary artists created an unforgettable experience and connection that we were thrilled to be a part of and share.
This special event was brought together by the Blue Devils and Conn Selmer brands Ludwig, and Musser as part of Conn Selmer’s Connection Session video series. A project that aims to bring players together, most often for the first time, to collaborate under the spirit of musical excellence. After a few virtual calls, the collective met up for the first time to rehearse 1 day before the performance. The events to come showcased the power of collaboration, trust, and passion.
Scenes from rehearsals can be summarized by a spirit of enthusiasm and comradery. Dani Markham joined the Front Ensemble behind an assortment of Ludwig and Musser percussion that included a Musser MUAV30S Vibraphone, Musser MURM45 Marimba, Ludwig Concert Toms, Ludwig Copper Concert Snare Drum, and a Ludwig Concert Bass Drum. Art Cruz brought the drum set energy to the front Ensemble behind Ludwig Classic Oak series drums complete with a 6.5” x 14” Raw Brass Snare Drum. BYOS added to the power and projection of the drumline with their Ultimate Marching series snare drums. These instruments combined with the array of Ludwig and Musser instruments already part of the Blue Devils drumline and front ensemble created an incredible contrast of tone that highlighted everyone’s individual style and sound seamlessly.
The extraordinary collaboration between the Blue Devils Drum Corps, Art Cruz, BYOS, and Dani Markham in Laramie, Wyoming, left a lasting impact on all those fortunate enough to participate and witness it. The seamless integration of different musical genres and styles showcased the power of unity and collaboration in the world of music. The Blue Devils players and staff deserve tremendous appreciation for their dedication and commitment to their craft, while the community of Laramie, Wyoming, demonstrated the spirit of openness and appreciation for the arts.
